Relocation of all five construction, housing departments to Sidist Kilo will help improve service efficiency

The Addis Abeba Construction and Housing Development Bureau is relocating its five departments to a new 12-storey building around Sidist Kilo, on Angola Street.
The new building, which covers 550sqm and took two years to complete, was built by the City Administration at a cost of 63 million Br.
The Bureau controls and administers government constructions in the city, including condominiums under the 20/80, schemes and low income housing under the 10/90 schemes.
Two departments; the Housing Construction Project Office, which heads the construction of condominium houses plan, and the Housing Development Administration Agency, responsible for transferring and administering condominium houses and government buildings, were previously located over two floors of a building nearby Adams Pavilion on Roosevelt Street, which also houses the Addis Abeba City Roads Authority (AACRA).
The other three departments; the Construction Industry Development Control Authority, the Public Participation Development Agency and the Government Construction Agency, responsible for the construction of condominiums, used to rent a five-storey building on Fitawrari Damtew Street, near the African Union headquarters, for 200,000 Br a month.
Customers were previously forced to run between the different locations, in order to obtain a comprehensive service. The move to Sidist Kilo, however, will centralise the departments and help the Bureau to expand its services, in order to meet the growing needs of the public, as it continues to build more condominiums in the city, said Estifanos Bisrat, head of public communications.
The Bureau has been responsible for the construction of 80,246 condominiums, up until 2010, and currently has an additional 95,000 condominiums under construction. However, it is understaffed and thus looking to recruit more employees in each of its departments, in addition to the 15,000 it presently employs, according to Estifanos.
The Housing Development Administration Agency is to occupy the first two of the 12 storeys, whilst the remaining departments will be located above the fourth storey. The Addis Ababa Bureau of Education will take up three storeys in itself.
The relocation is planned to bring related bureaus, under the city administration, together. The municipality has moved most of the bureaus, agencies, offices and commissions, under its management, out of the City Administration building, in Piazza, due to a lack of space.
The City Administration has also built a 12-storey building, which will house the Addis Abeba Sports Commission, Addis Abeba Capacity Building, Addis Abeba Civil Service, Technical & Vocational Education Training (TVET) and the Women, Children & Youth Bureau, at Amist Kilo, at a cost of 56 million Br.
